The sky was growing darker, though the wind had barely picked up at all this close to the ground. It was almost enough to set Thordin\u2019s teeth on edge as soon as he emerged from the darkness of the corridor, headed back to the fire where he knew slowly the others would gather before the storm hit\u2014the storm and whatever it brought with it\u2014or didn\u2019t bring with it, as he dearly hoped the case would be.<\/p>\n

When he reached the fire, though, the only ones there were there were Matt and Hecate and three of the five infants that had been born to their little community. He blinked, looking between them\u2014the baskets holding Tala\u2019s twins, Hecate with Thomas Merlin in her arms, Matt with his warhammer strapped to his back.<\/p>\n

Matt must have heard him coming because he twisted slightly, arm loosening from around Hecate\u2019s shoulders as he looked back over his shoulder toward Thordin.<\/p>\n

\u201cMission accomplished?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSomething like that,\u201d Thordin murmured, making a beeline for the coffee he could see sitting near the fire. \u201cShe said she\u2019d stay where she is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hecate\u2019s gaze followed him, her brows knitting. \u201cWhat are you two talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n

Thordin shook his head. \u201cJust Sif.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh.\u201d Hecate leaned back, her hand drifting down to pick up the mug of coffee sitting on the ground near her hip. It was as if she didn\u2019t require more explanation than that, which was silently a relief.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere\u2019s everyone else?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDoing whatever needs doing,\u201d Matt said, then shrugged. \u201cThat\u2019s all the answer I\u2019ve got. I\u2019m kind of puzzled, too. Actually, I\u2019m starting to wonder if they all know something we don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thordin sat down near the baskets with the twins, peering down at each of them in turn. Kurt was awake, but Gwen was fast asleep. His heart gave a little bounce, imagining a future that suddenly wasn\u2019t so far out of grasp for he and Sif.<\/p>\n

Someday.<\/em><\/p>\n
