\u201cHow\u2019s Thom?\u201d Thordin asked, hoping the change of subject would quell the queasy feeling that had gripped his stomach and refused to let go. There was something inherently unsettling about Marin not having some sort of plan, even though intellectually he knew there was no reason that she would have to have a plan, nor had she always had a plan going into every potentially dangerous situation they\u2019d run into before\u2014and they\u2019d always managed to escape it alive.<\/p>\n

Marin sighed and shook her head. \u201cNeither of us know what\u2019s really going wrong there,\u201d she murmured. \u201cHe gets better and then he gets worse.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSounds familiar,\u201d Hecate said quietly, leaning against Matt. Thordin frowned slightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt just shook his head and Thordin aborted the question before it was fully formed. There was something odd in his friend\u2019s expression that made him keep quiet.<\/p>\n

Marin sighed. \u201cEven if it is, it\u2019s not like we have a solution to the problem because we don\u2019t know what the problem is.\u201d She didn\u2019t bother to sit, just paced alongside the fire, clutching her mug between both hands. \u201cAnd even if we knew what the problem was, that\u2019s not a guarantee of a solution.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure he\u2019ll be fine, Mar,\u201d Matt said quietly. \u201cJust give it time. He pulled himself back from the edge once already, didn\u2019t he?\u201d<\/p>\n

She nodded, taking a sip of coffee. \u201cYeah. I just\u2014I don\u2019t know how many more times like that we\u2019ll get.\u201d<\/p>\n
