He could hear the last fading threads of conversation as he drew close to the fire, the last being Marin\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2014I don\u2019t know how many more times like that we\u2019ll get.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan paused and took a deep breath. Nothing followed the words, only silence. He frowned.<\/p>\n

Now what?<\/em><\/p>\n

A shiver crept down his spine and he picked up the pace, finding Thordin, Hecate, Matt, Marin, and three of five infants clustered near the fire. Marin stared pensively into the fire and Phelan found he didn\u2019t like that look, especially not with trouble potentially on the horizon.<\/p>\n

\u201cMar?\u201d<\/p>\n

Her gaze flicked up to meet his. Her lips thinned and she just shook her head. \u201cDon\u2019t ask,\u201d she said quietly. \u201cPlease, just don\u2019t ask.\u201d<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t like the sound of that.<\/em> Phelan frowned. Marin growled a sigh. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Matt wince.<\/p>\n

What the hell did I just walk into?<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cSo where were you?\u201d Thordin asked, staring at the fire and nursing his cup of coffee. A flicker of relief crossed Marin\u2019s face and in that second, Phelan decided to let whatever was bothering her go\u2014at least for now.<\/p>\n

Probably won\u2019t get us killed, right?<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWas out on the wall, watching the storm roll in. Getting close now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marin took a deep breath. \u201cAny sign of the group out at the greenhouses?\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan nodded. \u201cYeah, they were just coming back when I came back here. Seamus is up there on the watch. He\u2019ll let us know if something pops.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marin nodded, her gaze drifting to the fire for a few moments. \u201cI just wish we could catch a break.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNever have that kind of luck,\u201d Matt said, shaking his head. Phelan grimaced.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t talk like that,\u201d Phelan muttered. \u201cHave to hope, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

Thunder growled, loud and close enough to shake the ground. Marin just glanced up, her brow arching slightly.<\/p>\n
