I choked on my protests and let Phelan hold me, his arms tight around me. He couldn\u2019t be sure of that, could he? How could he know my visions wouldn\u2019t come true? I\u2019d let myself begin to believe that they weren\u2019t real, that nothing was wrong, that everything would be fine after Thom accepted our magic as real, once he stopped denying the gift he had. The visions\u2014the ones of him dying of him wasting away and fading\u2014had stopped for a while.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe visions came back,\u201d I finally managed to say, my forehead pressed against Phelan\u2019s collarbone. \u201cI don\u2019t know if it\u2019s her doing or something else. But I\u2019m seeing him fading again, I\u2019m seeing him slipping again. I can\u2019t lose him, Phelan. I need him\u2014his son needs him. We\u2019re supposed to have a future. That part\u2014worrying about that part\u2014I wasn\u2019t supposed to have to do<\/em> that anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all right,\u201d Phelan murmured. \u201cD\u00e9ithe agus arrachtaigh<\/em>, Marin, you know that I\u2019d never let anything happen to him if it was in my power to stop it. This is like everything else. It\u2019ll be okay.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPhelan, we can\u2019t know for sure that it\u2019s going to be okay.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen have we ever?\u201d He pressed a kiss to my forehead, so tender that it almost brought on tears again. My heart clenched and I sucked in a shaky breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cPromise you\u2019ll help me?\u201d I whispered. \u201cPromise you\u2019ll help me save him?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not a promise you ever needed to ask for, leann\u00e1n<\/em>. You know I will.\u201d He hugged me again. \u201cYou know that I will. Now come on. We\u2019d better get back before they send a search party\u2014and before the storm breaks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another shiver shot through me as I glanced up toward the sky, growing darker by the second. I nodded.<\/p>\n
