03"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>[This post is from Hecate&#8217;s point of view.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Lightning struck near enough that it shook the ground and left them both momentarily blinded, the crack of thunder that accompanied it leaving their ears ringing.\u00a0 Thom lurched toward her and his son, as if to shield them out of instinct.\u00a0 Lin startled violently in her arms, then started to wail.\u00a0 An inaudible curse slipped from her lips as she shifted her grip on the infant, holding him pressed against his shoulder and rocking back and forth, making soothing sounds neither of them could hear.<\/p>\n<p><em>Damn!\u00a0 Are they fighting for control of the storm now, or is someone\u2019s control just slipping a little?<\/em>\u00a0 Hecate wasn\u2019t sure she wanted to know the answer.\u00a0 Her head rang even as her vision cleared and her hearing started to return.\u00a0 She could feel the buzz of electricity against her skin, as if the ambient energy in the air hadn\u2019t faded.<\/p>\n<p>Thom was shaking slightly as he pulled away, complexion washed-out in the firelight.\u00a0 Hecate cursed again, more softly this time.\u00a0 Lin was starting to calm, though only slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere,\u201d Thom whispered.\u00a0 \u201cLet me take him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease,\u201d Thom said, slumping against the log bench behind them.\u00a0 \u201cBesides, you may need your hands free soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hecate swallowed bile.\u00a0 <em>Did he just see something?\u00a0 Or is he just taking precautions?<\/em>\u00a0 \u201cAre you\u2014?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot really,\u201d Thom said as she eased his son into his waiting arms.\u00a0 He winced slightly as he shifted Lin into a more comfortable position.\u00a0 He was still crying, but it was starting to taper off, as if his fear was ebbing.\u00a0 There was no doubt in her mind that he\u2019d been crying from fright.\u00a0 She\u2019d seen reactions like it before in infants and that was always what it was.<\/p>\n<p>Hecate brushed her fingertips over Lin\u2019s hair, glancing up to meet Thom\u2019s gaze.\u00a0 There was fear there, fear that set her guts twisting again.\u00a0 \u201cThom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to get to the wall,\u201d he whispered.\u00a0 \u201cGo.\u00a0 They need you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just do,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cDon\u2019t ask questions you don\u2019t want to know the answers to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The problem was that she really <em>did<\/em> want to know the answer\u2014he just didn\u2019t want her to press.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[This post is from Hecate&#8217;s point of view.] Lightning struck near enough that it shook the ground and left them both momentarily blinded, the crack of thunder that accompanied it leaving their ears ringing.\u00a0 Thom lurched toward her and his &hellip;
