And it <em>was<\/em> silent, as if everyone else was holding their breath, the same as I was, waiting, watching, expecting something other than what came.<\/p>\n<p>What came was nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I sucked in one breath and then another, staring at that field until Seamus moved and I snapped out of whatever fugue had temporarily gripped me. He needed help, Phelan needed help\u2014and more besides.<\/p>\n<p>I exhaled with a shudder and reached for Seamus. My next breath came with a curse and he just looked at me with a grimace and a slightly arched brow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look like hell already,\u201d I said as I started to lift him. I needed to get him down off that wall and to a healer\u2014probably Jac, but maybe J.T. I\u2019d figure it out once we were on the ground, or maybe once we were back by the fire where there was better light. The sky was still dark with stormclouds and I suspected that it would be for a while yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got shot,\u201d he said, still staring at me as I hauled him upright. He winced, then groaned. \u201cWhat were you expecting?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to go with <em>not<\/em> you playing hero like that.\u201d I blew out a quiet breath. \u201cPhelan, are you all right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust need a minute,\u201d he rasped. \u201cStay where you are, I\u2019ll help. Just let me get my bearings again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I glanced at him and grimaced. His complexion was almost as ashy as his cousin\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p><em>Nope. This has to be me.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Matt okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened my mouth to answer Phelan\u2019s question, only to be cut off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will be,\u201d Matt said, his voice hoarse, as if he\u2019d been screaming\u2014though I knew he hadn\u2019t been, at least not out loud.
