My brothers and Phelan always said it would but I never for a heartbeat actually believed them. I always thought that if I did eventually marry and have children it would be at my father\u2019s whim, like it was with Seamus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A hollow spot opened up in Cameron\u2019s stomach and he swallowed hard. \u201cEven that ended up working out for the best, somehow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeamus is a lot more lucky than anyone gives him credit for\u2014even he doesn\u2019t realize how lucky he is.\u201d Neve glanced back over her shoulder at him, smiling sadly for a moment. \u201cAnd I\u2019m glad of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe too,\u201d Cameron said softly. \u201cHe deserves it. All of you do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neve laughed quietly and turned her attention back to their daughter. \u201cMaybe. It\u2019s nice to think so, anyway. We\u2019re not saints though, Cam\u2014we\u2019re just on your side. That makes us seem different, maybe. I don\u2019t know. Sometimes, I don\u2019t think there\u2019s a side of the so-called angels, you know? To borrow a phrase, anyway. We our dark sides and our things that we\u2019re not proud of\u2014entire wars weren\u2019t not proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would be surprised if you didn\u2019t,\u201d Cameron said softly, watching her. It was as if a weight had suddenly settled across her shoulders, one he couldn\u2019t shift away for her. A quiet sigh escaped him and she looked back again, her brow arching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head. \u201cWhat\u2019s past is passed, Neve. You can\u2019t change it, only go forward. So what if something went wrong a long time ago. You\u2019re on the right side now.\u201d He tilted his head. \u201cOr are you doubting that, too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot for a heartbeat,\u201d she said fervently. \u201cNo. We\u2019re on the right side of this. And even if I wasn\u2019t? Well. My conscience wouldn\u2019t let me be anywhere other than here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLikewise.\u201d Cameron rocked to his knees, careful not to jostle Artorius, and leaned in to kiss her cheek. \u201cNow stop fretting.
