Laying on his back near the edge of the tents, he stared up at the striped blue and white above him, gaze slipping in and out of focus as he forgot the feeling of the damp ground beneath his back and ignored the faint chill to the air.<\/p>\n<p>Things were changing and he wasn\u2019t certain what to make of those changes, or if he should even worry too much about them. But he could feel the shift in his bones, down to the marrow. It was strange, but not necessarily frightening.<\/p>\n<p>Not yet, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing, Phelan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jacqueline stood above him, her nose wrinkled slightly as she gazed down at him in apparent confusion and concern. Phelan smiled a little.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThinking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive feet from where the rain\u2019s coming in?\u201d The healer smirked slightly. \u201cSomehow, I think I could come up with much better places to lay down and think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phelan attempted an eloquent shrug from flat on his back, one he suspected fell <em>well<\/em> short of the mark. The look on Jac\u2019s face told him that he was absolutely correct in that regard and he heaved a heavy sigh.<\/p>\n<p>The tiny blonde put one hand on her hip as she watched him roll onto his side and begin to get up, eyes narrowing slightly as she studied him not with a lover\u2019s gaze, but one of a now-experienced healer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m all right,\u201d he assured her as he got his feet back under him and dusted himself off. Some of the dampness lingered, seeped into his clothing. He\u2019d have to deal with that before too long or else Jacqueline would have something to <em>really <\/em>worry about.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUh-huh,\u201d she said, still eyeing him. \u201cBecause you on the ground like that is totally normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now it was Phelan\u2019s turn to shoot his lover a long, measuring look. Slowly, a wry grin crept across her features.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay, okay. Maybe it\u2019s less unusual than I am making it out to be but I still have every right to be concerned and curious, now don\u2019t I? What\u2019s going on, Phelan? Something\u2019s got to be, right? Beyond the usual?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shrugged again and her gaze sharpened into a glare.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhelan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cSorry. It\u2019s just\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo games,\u201d she said softly. \u201cNo secrets. You promised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And he had. He\u2019d promised that the only secrets he kept would be the necessary ones, and oddly enough their definitions of <em>necessary<\/em> seemed to align fairly well\u2014something he\u2019d taken as yet another sign that he\u2019d finally found the person he\u2019d been meant to find after all of the centuries he\u2019d spent alone, paying penance for crimes that he wasn\u2019t sure were all his to atone for, though he had to admit that he did have <em>more<\/em> than his fair share of things to pay for.<\/p>\n<p>Sighing again, he took both of her hands in his and squeezed them gently. \u201cIt\u2019s nothing that I\u2019d call <em>bad<\/em>,\u201d he murmured. \u201cAt least not at this point. Just a little concerning maybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConcerning,\u201d she echoed, eyes searching his face for something he wasn\u2019t sure she\u2019d find\u2014reassurance, perhaps. \u201cConcerning how?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the prophecies,\u201d he said softly. \u201cAll the futures\u2014everything that I\u2019ve been taught, everything that\u2019s been seen by people like Thom and Marin and my cousin and all the other Seers down through the ages. Something\u2019s changing, Jac.
