Their nose is bloodied, but I think we\u2019d be foolish to believe they won\u2019t come again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat question could be answered by either one of us,\u201d I muttered, then sighed. There was a tightness in my chest, like a giant hand had wrapped around my heart and squeezed. Part of it, of course, were the lingering thoughts of losing Thom, the fear that I\u2019d lived with every day since he\u2019d been thrown into that watchtower rail. \u201cThe short version of the answer, I think, would be the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot long,\u201d Hecate said, glancing up again, studying me. \u201cMatter of time.\u201d She sighed and shook her head. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter, anyway. We can win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe <em>will<\/em> win,\u201d I said quietly, still staring out at the rain. \u201cThough I start to wonder if maybe it\u2019s time we took the fight to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hecate stiffened slightly, then visibly forced herself to relax, exhaling slowly. \u201cIt might not be hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe not,\u201d I said, then looked at her, brow furrowing. \u201cBesides\u2014they still have Persephone, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shivered. \u201cSo far as I know. I can\u2019t be sure but I don\u2019t know where else she\u2019d be other than in their hands.\u201d Her gaze drifted back to her sketch. \u201cOtherwise, I think she would have found us somehow. She reached out to J.T. If she figured out I was still alive, she\u2019d come looking. She\u2014for a long time, she was my only friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the more reason for us to get her out of whatever situation she\u2019s stuck in\u2014especially if it\u2019s an abusive one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Pluton gone, it definitely is,\u201d she whispered. \u201cHe wasn\u2019t the greatest, but he wasn\u2019t the worst, either. Someone else has probably claimed her now and it won\u2019t be good.\u201d She exhaled a shaky breath. \u201cThe myths are silent on a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow could they not be?\u201d I asked softly. \u201cI can\u2019t imagine that anyone would want much of the truth to come out, if it\u2019s as dark as it all seems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re right about that,\u201d she said. \u201cYou have no idea how right, honestly. But he never hurt her, not more than a couple usually does. He just kept her, that\u2019s all.
