I slid my arm around her shoulders, squeezing her tightly. Hecate sighed and shook her head.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just owe it to her, you know? She helped me. We helped each other. Neither of us belonged there but we found a way to make it a home for as long as we had to.\u201d Hecate blew out a breath slowly, then drew a deeper one, bowing her head for a few seconds. \u201cHer longer than me in a lot of ways.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry he never came for you,\u201d I whispered. She stiffened slightly, looking up and biting her lip.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t your fault.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was Brigh\u00edd\u2019s,\u201d I said softly. \u201cHe never told her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew he couldn\u2019t,\u201d she said, then smiled a little. \u201cWe both knew what his going back meant and it was worth it. I came a few times to see him after and it was hard but it was worth being there, even if it was only for a few minutes or only from a distance. I loved him\u2014I loved C\u00edar. But I love your brother more<\/em>, Marin. I love him so much more.\u201d<\/p>\n

I smiled back and hugged her tightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m glad he chose me,\u201d she said, resting her head against my shoulder again. \u201cI\u2019m glad he broke through.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo am I,\u201d I said. \u201cYou cold?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA little. Why, are you thinking about going back to the fire?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJust away from the rain,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019ve been helping with the books again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI heard Jac caught Phelan reading mythology the other day.\u201d<\/p>\n

I arched a brow. \u201cHe is<\/em> mythology.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo am I. So\u2014well. Not you precisely<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. Not yet, anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hecate laughed, flipping her sketchbook closed. \u201cNo,\u201d she agreed. \u201cNot yet. Something tells me soon enough, though. Soon enough, that\u2019s going to happen.\u201d She started gathering up her pencils and supplies as I slowly stood up, checking on Lin as I slid off the dresser we\u2019d been perched on. He was fast asleep, nestled against my chest and wrapped in his blanket, tiny fingers tangled in my shirt. I exhaled a sigh, unable to stop myself from smiling.<\/p>\n

She glanced over and smiled, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomeday,\u201d she said softly. \u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n

I canted my head to one side and she shook her head.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been thinking. Not a lot about it because it scares the shit out of me and I\u2019m afraid that I\u2014that I won\u2019t be able to handle it. But I\u2019ve been thinking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA family?\u201d<\/p>\n

She nodded, biting her lip. \u201cDo you think…?\u201d<\/p>\n

As she tucked her sketchbook and pencils under her arm, I wrapped my arm around her shoulders again, smiling. \u201cI think anything\u2019s possible. Especially when there\u2019s love. When you\u2019ve got love, anything can happen.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
