\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jacqueline and Phelan exchanged a look before Phelan cleared his throat.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019re talking about Persephone,\u201d he said quietly, watching J.T.\u2019s reaction.\u00a0 There was no flinch, no wince.\u00a0 Instead, J.T. just nodded slowly, exhaling a breath he seemed like he\u2019d been holding for perhaps too long.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cYeah,\u201d he said, voice quiet.\u00a0 \u201cShe asked for our help\u2014for my help\u2014and I haven\u2019t been able to do anything.\u00a0 I told Hecate about it, I haven\u2019t done anything else.\u00a0 What kind of good am I to her if I can\u2019t figure out a damn thing to help her?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cSettle down,\u201d Phelan told him, snagging some mugs before he slowly poured hot water over the grounds in the French press.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s not as if we\u2019ve had much breathing room to figure that out.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter,\u201d J.T. said, staring hard at the fire, as if it would somehow give up state secrets if he glared at it long and hard enough.\u00a0 \u201cI made a promise and I haven\u2019t kept it.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cAnd it\u2019s eating you,\u201d Jacqueline said quietly, watching him.\u00a0 Phelan winced, glancing at her again before concentrating on the coffee.\u00a0 \u201cAnd you\u2019re letting it.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 J.T. exhaled a frustrated sigh.\u00a0 \u201cAnd if I am?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThen you shouldn\u2019t,\u201d she said, her tone brooking no argument.\u00a0 \u201cWe can only do what we can and trust me, we\u2019ve all been wrapped up in a lot of crap lately and we keep getting attacked.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cAnd we got attacked by someone that\u2019s probably involved in holding her\u2014and we turned them back,\u201d Phelan said, his voice quiet as he started to pour the coffee.\u00a0 \u201cThat has to amount to something.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cMaybe,\u201d J.T. said, still staring at the fire.\u00a0 Phelan started handing out the coffee, studying J.T. as he handed him a mug.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
