For a few seconds, J.T. just stared at her as if disbelieving, as if the words she\u2019d just spoken didn\u2019t make sense. Hecate reached for his hand, squeezed his fingers, and he sucked in a breath, eyes closing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know,\u201d she said. \u201cI feel it, too. But losing yourself over it? It\u2019s not worth it, J.T. We\u2019ll do what we promised one way or another. She\u2019ll understand. She always has\u2014and I know that she will this time, too.\u201d Hecate glanced toward the others. \u201cWe\u2019ve agreed to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan nodded slowly. \u201cWe have,\u201d he confirmed quietly. \u201cAnd we keep our promises.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat we do,\u201d Marin said, sitting down next to Jacqueline. \u201cWe have thus far and we\u2019ll keep on doing it as long as I have anything to say about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut when?\u201d J.T. asked as his eyes blinked open. \u201cWhen<\/em>? And how, dammit? We don\u2019t even\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll figure out a way to find her,\u201d Hecate said, her voice firm and certain. It shot shivers down Phelan\u2019s spine, not from any sort of fear or memory, but because it was unexpected and powerful.<\/p>\n

Being here <\/em>has been good for her, I guess.<\/em> Even when she\u2019d been attacking them, been acting the enemy against he and his family, there had always been a thread of something he couldn\u2019t quite put his finger on at the time but now recognized for what it was\u2014uncertainty and fear.<\/p>\n

He watched her for a moment, taking a slow sip of coffee before he turned to fill two more mugs, one for her and another for Marin, smiling slightly to himself. Truth be known, he was much happier with her on their side than the alternative.<\/p>\n

The long centuries that had gone before had just been too hard\u2014for all of them, it seemed. Now, times were different, and it was better that way.<\/p>\n
