\u201cWhy then?\u201d Jacqueline asked, glancing at Hecate, her brow arching slightly. \u201cWhy when it starts to snow?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause some will wait that long to march, thinking our defenses will be less.\u201d Hecate smiled slightly. \u201cThey will not expect what they get.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey never do,\u201d Marin said softly, smiling crookedly. \u201cThat\u2019s why we\u2019re still here I think.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think you\u2019re wrong on that one,\u201d Phelan murmured, settling into a spot next to the fire, slowly sipping at the mug of coffee cradled between his palms. Despite the season, there was an odd chill to the air, a dampness that settled into his joints.<\/p>\n

Maybe I\u2019m finally getting old.<\/em><\/p>\n

He almost laughed out loud and the expression on his face must have given away his amusement because he found Marin looking at him funny.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d she asked, a wry smile on her face and audible in her voice.<\/p>\n

Phelan shook his head, grinning. \u201cNothing, don\u2019t worry about it. Just thinking things that shouldn\u2019t be nearly as amusing as they are.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now Jacqueline was looking at him with an arched brow. Hecate glanced between the other two women and him and just grinned.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think you\u2019ll be in trouble if you don\u2019t elaborate,\u201d she said, taking another sip of her coffee.<\/p>\n

\u201cNah,\u201d Jacqueline said, smirking. \u201cI\u2019ll just get it out of him later. If he doesn\u2019t tell me then<\/em>, that\u2019s when he\u2019ll be in trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hecate laughed at that and Phelan just shook his head, rolling his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrying to start something, aren\u2019t you?\u201d he teased.<\/p>\n

Hecate grinned. \u201cI\u2019m not starting anything. I\u2019m just picking on you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The way she said it, matter-of-factly with a wide grin on her face made Phelan smile. It was a sign of something changing, a sign that yes, she really was<\/em> comfortable with them.<\/p>\n
