There was no sign of the rain letting up even an hour later as Thom limped back to the opening of the forge, watching the clouds for a moment, watching the rain come down.\u00a0 Matt glanced his way, working on the blade of a scythe they planned to use in the next month or so to harvest the small stand of wheat they\u2019d managed to grow down near the old greenhouses on the other side of the river.\u00a0 Thom wasn\u2019t entirely sure how well the crop had done\u2014it had been months since he\u2019d seen it, and he wasn\u2019t sure how much all of the rain they\u2019d gotten that summer might have hurt or helped it, but apparently there was enough left to make the scythe necessary, which he took as a good sign.<\/p>\n
\u201cStill bad?\u201d Matt asked, his hammer falling in easy rhythm, a counterpoint to the sound of the rain against the roof.<\/p>\n
\u201cSteady,\u201d Thom said, leaning in the doorway for a few seconds, still watching.\u00a0 \u201cDoesn\u2019t look like it\u2019s going to let up anytime soon.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSuppose one of us should have brought an umbrella,\u201d Matt said, only half joking.\u00a0 Thom glanced back over his shoulder in time to see Matt flash a grin before he was intent on his work again.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s all right.\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen you swing around on those crutches.\u00a0 You\u2019re quick enough.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat was when my shoulders weren\u2019t still half wrecked,\u201d Thom countered, returning to his seat closer to the forge\u2019s heat.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019ll be able to make a dash. I\u2019ll hobble along.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI could go and get<\/em> an umbrella,\u201d Matt offered, not pausing or looking up.\u00a0 He likely wouldn\u2019t be going anywhere until he\u2019d gotten his project shaped anyway, though the sharpening, likely, would wait until later.\u00a0 Neither of them had eaten much of breakfast and the day was creeping onward toward lunchtime.<\/p>\n \u201cNo sense in that,\u201d Thom said. \u00a0\u201cI\u2019ll manage.\u00a0 Always do.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWell, then we\u2019ll get soaked together,\u201d Matt said.\u00a0 \u201cJust make sure you wrap that sketchbook.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAlways do,\u201d Thom said, then smiled as he picked up said sketchbook again.\u00a0 \u201cThis thing holds a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve noticed,\u201d Matt said, grinning as he looked up again.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve seen your designs, remember?\u201d<\/p>\n Thom inclined his head.\u00a0 That much was certainly true.\u00a0 \u201cWe didn\u2019t get much of a chance to build them this summer, though, did we?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s not over yet,\u201d Matt reminded him.\u00a0 \u201cAnd we\u2019ll hopefully have another month or two at least before it snows.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s the hope,\u201d Thom murmured, his gaze drifting toward the rain again.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019ll see if we get what we\u2019ve hoped for.\u201d<\/p>\n Sometimes we do, anyway.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" [This post is from Thom’s point of view.] There was no sign of the rain letting up even an hour later as Thom limped back to the opening of the forge, watching the clouds for a moment, watching the rain … Continue reading
