\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s a maybe<\/em> about it,\u201d Matt said, voice firm, half rumbling. \u201cYou need to make a map, Thom. I know I at least want to know what\u2019s rattling around inside your head.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thom smiled faintly, shaking his head. \u201cAll right,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cAll right, I can take a hint. Draw a damn map, Thom. Let us know what we need to do in case something goes sideways or just in case you\u2019re hurt and can\u2019t direct us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI did not say that,\u201d Matt said, glancing up from his work. \u201cI just said you should draw a map.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhatever the reason, you\u2019re right,\u201d Thom said. \u201cYou\u2019re right. I need to make a map.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt exhaled and tugged the blade out of the forge, laying it on the anvil again. \u201cIt\u2019s just good to have a plan, Thom,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cDon\u2019t you think so?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAye,\u201d Thom murmured. \u201cYou\u2019re right.\u201d His brother-in-law was right about a lot lately, not that it upset Thom much at all.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ll need him someday. I don\u2019t know when, but they\u2019ll need him.<\/em><\/p>\n

Thom let his eyes slide shut for a moment.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ll need him when Marin and I are gone.<\/em><\/p>\n

It would happen someday, that much he knew. There was no doubt in his mind that it would\u2014he\u2019d seen too much, and somehow he knew that Marin had as well, even though she hadn\u2019t said it. She didn\u2019t have to. He knew her well enough.<\/p>\n

Someday, we\u2019ll go, and he\u2019ll be left behind.<\/em><\/p>\n

He\u2019ll be fine. They\u2019ll be fine.<\/em><\/p>\n

His lips thinned for a moment as he smoothed his hand over the page, staring at it for a few seconds. I just have to make sure that they\u2019re prepared for that day to come and that we left them with the best possible chances we can.<\/em><\/p>\n
