The sound of Matt\u2019s hammer against the metal stopped and Thom looked up, meeting a gaze that was suddenly concerned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d Thom asked quietly.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight,\u201d Matt said, glancing down at the scythe blade on his anvil before looking at Thom again, harder, more critically, for several seconds before he looked down again, returning to his work. \u201cYou\u2019re dangerously introspective and it\u2019s starting to unnerve me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, it\u2019s not like this conversation hasn\u2019t given me any reason to be introspective, now has it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIs that your method of telling me to quit worrying because it\u2019s all my fault that you\u2019re acting in ways that would make me worry?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSomething like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt snorted, hammer ringing a little louder than was strictly necessary. Thom winced.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeriously. It\u2019s fine. Nothing\u2019s wrong\u2014nothing that you\u2019ve got any ability to change, anyway.\u201d Thom smiled and shook his head, flipping to a fresh page of his sketchbook. \u201cAnd even if it was, it\u2019s not something to worry about today. Finish that damn blade so we can head in.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt shook his head again, his hammering falling back into its usual rhythm as he settled to the task at hand again, either mollified or at least willing to let it all go for now. Thom exhaled a silent sigh of relief as he turned back to his sketchpad, slowly starting to draw out the lines of their settlement.<\/p>\n

If his brother-in-law had pressed for answers, he wasn\u2019t sure what he would have told him. He might have even lied about what was bothering him, if only to keep Matt from joining him in his worry\u2014or to keep Matt from trying to change something that seemed set in stone.<\/p>\n

Pray he doesn\u2019t press you on it,<\/em> a little voice in the back of his head said. Because if you tell him the truth, then that\u2019s another secret he\u2019ll have to keep\u2014and that\u2019s not fair to him.<\/em><\/p>\n
