\u201cYou\u2019ve got that look,\u201d I said to my brother as he emerged from his room into the hallway\u2019s gloom. He squinted at me in the dim, frowning briefly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat look?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019re you worried about?\u201d I asked by way of answering his question. I crossed my arms, which mostly had the effect of looking like I was cradling Lin in the sling across my chest, but I figured he\u2019d get the point one way or another.<\/p>\n

Matt made a face and I knew that he had. \u201cIt\u2019s nothing you need to worry about.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cReally.\u201d<\/p>\n

His expression darkened. \u201cYes, really.\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t buy it, but he knew that. So I just shrugged and let my arms drop. \u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n

I started toward the cookfires and he fell into step with me, shoving his hands into the pockets of his hoodie and brooding as we walked.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs it the day?\u201d I asked after we\u2019d gone a dozen steps. I glanced toward him, my brow arching. He scowled at the ground in front of his feet. \u201cThe date on the calendar?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know why we keep track anymore,\u201d he muttered.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know it doesn\u2019t seem like it makes sense,\u201d I said. \u201cBut there are things we want to be able to track. You don\u2019t want to know what your nephew\u2019s birthdate is?\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt heaved a sigh but didn\u2019t look at me, just kept walking. His silence was all I needed to know that I was right, he did<\/em> want to know things like that. I also knew that it probably was<\/em> the day that at least was part of what was upsetting him.<\/p>\n

The rest? I had no idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cThom still in bed?\u201d<\/p>\n

I nodded. \u201cHe\u2019ll be up soon, but for now, he\u2019s getting some more sleep. He didn\u2019t sleep very well last night.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was a hesitation, then he asked, \u201cThe day?\u201d<\/p>\n
