\u201cIt\u2019s settled, then,\u201d Hecate said, looking between Matt and Phelan. \u201cThe three of us will go see what\u2019s going on with the Hunt while Tala and Marin stay put with the children.\u201d Her gaze drifted toward Marin. \u201cI\u2019m sure Thom\u2019s about to arrive soon enough, isn\u2019t he?\u201d<\/p>\n

Marin nodded, lips thinning. \u201cProbably very soon. You\u2019d better hurry.\u201d<\/p>\n

A shiver crept down Matt\u2019s spine. He knew there were several<\/em> reasons why she was urging them to hurry, and at least two of them had to do with her husband. If they lingered, they\u2019d have to explain, delaying them, and on top of that, there were strong odds that he\u2019d want to come with them.<\/p>\n

That<\/em> was something Matt wasn\u2019t exactly keen to deal with.<\/p>\n

His hand found Hecate\u2019s and squeezed. He wasn\u2019t entirely happy with the idea of her coming, either, especially not knowing what the Hunt had spotted, but that was a battle he knew for certain he\u2019d lost before it even began.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s get going, then,\u201d Matt said quietly, tugging at Hecate\u2019s hand. His sister\u2019s voice followed them.<\/p>\n

\u201cBe careful.\u201d<\/p>\n

He glanced back, nodding, then kept moving, pace picking up the further they got from the cookfire. He didn\u2019t want to betray the level of nerves he was feeling, but he knew the quickening of his steps told that tale all too readily.<\/p>\n

At least he could still hear them whistling back and forth to each other, even if he couldn\u2019t quite make out what it meant.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s something. I just wish I knew what they were seeing. Damn.<\/em><\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t as if he expected the codes\u2014the language<\/em>\u2014to never change. It wasn\u2019t that at all. It was that he couldn\u2019t remember<\/em> what the code was and deep down, he felt like he should have been able to.<\/p>\n
