They were nearly to the edge of the Hunt\u2019s encampment when Matt spotted Gideon leaving it, heading toward the gate at a clip much too fast to give him any sort of comfort. His hand spasmed around Hecate\u2019s before he let go, calling out, \u201cGideon!\u201d<\/p>\n

Gideon spun, blinking for a second before he started for the trio. \u201cHave you seen Seamus?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s still in bed, recovering,\u201d Matt answered, moving to meet him, leaving Hecate and Phelan a few steps behind him. \u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t–?\u201d<\/p>\n

He shook his head quickly. \u201cNo. There are things I don\u2019t remember.\u201d He glanced over his shoulder toward Phelan and Hecate, then back to Gideon again. \u201cAnd there are some things he forced himself to forget.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gideon nodded, silent for a moment, then said, \u201cI understand. Some of the outriders are returning.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd?\u201d Phelan peered past Matt\u2019s shoulder to Gideon, his voice as concerned as the expression on his face had been a moment before when Matt had looked back at him.<\/p>\n

Gideon swallowed. \u201cAnd they\u2019ve spotted something dangerous heading our way. It doesn\u2019t seem they were spotted, but is there ever really a guarantee of that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Hecate said softly, reclaiming Matt\u2019s hand, leaning her shoulder into his. Matt leaned against her in return, pressing a kiss to her ear before his attention returned fully to Gideon. \u201cNo, there never is. Where were they riding?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNorth of here and west, toward the lakeshore,\u201d Gideon said. \u201cTwo riders with an army massing at their backs. They\u2019re not on the march yet, but they will be soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWho?\u201d Matt asked, feeling his throat tighten again, stomach churning. \u201cWho is it, Gideon?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not sure,\u201d he said, then swallowed. \u201cI need to get to the gate, Matt. I have to let the outriders in.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll come with you,\u201d Matt said, mouth dry. \u201cLet\u2019s go.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
