Seamus stared at nothing, jaw getting tighter and tighter, muscles coiling into overwrought springs. Leinth leaned back for a second, peering up into his face. He wasn\u2019t sure what she was searching for, but he thought it was likely she wouldn\u2019t find it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d she asked in a bare whisper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI gave him to Pluton,\u201d Seamus said, feeling numb. It was almost as if his consciousness had left his body, that someone else was saying the words even though he knew they came from his lips.<\/p>\n<p>Her brows knit. \u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t kill him outright when I faced him. I struck a deal,\u201d Seamus said. \u201cI struck a deal with Pluton. Orcus in exchange for leaving my isles alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t understand.\u201d Leinth caught his face between her hands again. Her palms were warm, rough, and Seamus squeezed his eyes shut against the sudden sting of tears. \u201cSeamus, what are you <em>saying<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m saying that I didn\u2019t kill him, but I thought Pluton probably had,\u201d Seamus said, his voice hoarse. \u201cI\u2019m saying that if he\u2019s alive, he has more reason to kill me than he has anyone else. He\u2019ll come to <em>take<\/em> you, but he\u2019ll come to <em>kill<\/em> me. Our score is far from settled, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen he\u2019s not dead,\u201d Leinth said faintly. \u201cBut with Pluton\u2019s death, somehow he\u2019s been freed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seamus nodded. Leinth\u2019s fingertips dug into the flesh of his cheeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeamus, look at me,\u201d she said, her voice a whisper. \u201c<em>Look <\/em>at me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He forced his eyes open, sure he would see rage and censure in her eyes. Instead, there was neither.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeamus, if he\u2019s escaped whatever captivity that Pluton had him trapped in, then perhaps Persphone\u2019s managed to do the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPersephone,\u201d Seamus echoed, his brow furrowing. \u201cWhat has she\u2014?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe nothing,\u201d Leinth said. \u201cBut maybe everything. She asked for our help, Seamus. Maybe she\u2019s free\u2014maybe she\u2019s out there and lost and maybe this was the clue we needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe might not be.\u201d Seamus swallowed hard. \u201cWe don\u2019t know that. We don\u2019t know anything for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, we don\u2019t,\u201d Leinth agreed. \u201cBut it\u2019s <em>something<\/em> and right now, something\u2019s all we\u2019ve got.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[This post is from Seamus&#8217;s point of view.] Leinth grew tense, her arms tightening.
