The four of them\u2014Matt, Phelan, Hecate, and Gideon\u2014reached the wall together, startling Paul, who was climbing down from the watchtower.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was about to head in to tell you someone was coming,\u201d he said, blinking at them as he dropped the last few feet to the ground beneath the tower. \u201cLooked like one of the Hunt\u2019s riders.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is,\u201d Gideon said, then scrambled up the ladder. Paul blinked, then looked at the others.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s going on? Should I be worried?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPossibly,\u201d Matt said, his voice shaded with caution. There was no telling how close whoever it was had gotten, nor was it a sure thing that they\u2019d make an unerring beeline for the settlement.<\/p>\n

There was a damn strong possibility that they would, though.<\/p>\n

When has our luck ever run any differently?<\/em> He tried to swallow the bitterness that rose in his throat. Hecate took his hand and squeezed, as if she could sense what he was thinking.<\/p>\n

Maybe she could.<\/p>\n

Phelan exhaled, reaching out to squeeze Paul\u2019s shoulder. \u201cGo get something to eat. Tala\u2019s by the fire with Marin. We\u2019ll keep watch until you\u2019re back.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you sure?\u201d Paul\u2019s brow furrowed. \u201cIt\u2019s not a big deal, I can stay.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all right,\u201d Phelan said. \u201cGo. We\u2019ve got it. Gideon wants to talk to whoever\u2019s coming back anyway\u2014it\u2019s one of their scouts.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAll right,\u201d Paul said, glancing up again, then toward the gate. \u201cAs long as you\u2019re sure.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are,\u201d Matt said quietly, then jerked a thumb back over his shoulder. \u201cGo on, while the griddles are still hot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Paul offered a brief smile, nodding before he jogged off, back toward the tents and the cookfires. Hopefully, neither Marin nor Tala would betray the depth of their concern.<\/p>\n

Matt had little confidence that they wouldn\u2019t, but they could hope\u2014that was all they could do, really, was hope.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
