\u201cWho do you think it is?\u201d Phelan asked in the same breath that Gideon asked, \u201cHow far away are they?\u201d<\/p>\n

Daegon glanced between them, frowning, clearly trying to figure out who to answer first.<\/p>\n

Hecate drew up alongside Matt, her fingers twining through his. \u201cHow far away are they?\u201d she asked, her voice quiet. Her hand tightened around his, though she still stood straight, showing no hint of fear.<\/p>\n

Daegon exhaled, rubbing at his temple. \u201cTwenty miles, maybe,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cNorthwest, near the lakeshore. It could be remnants of the dirae<\/em> who were here in the last fight. Might be others.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s probably the same ones,\u201d Hecate said softly. \u201cBut you could be right, they could be from somewhere else. They\u2019re\u2014they\u2019re kind of everywhere. They answer those who know how to call them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCould you still do it?\u201d Phelan asked quietly, studying her.<\/p>\n

Hecate shuddered. \u201cWould you really want me to? I know I wouldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess not,\u201d Phelan said, grimacing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can beat them if we have to,\u201d Matt said. \u201cDoes it look like they\u2019re heading this way?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think they\u2019re just massing,\u201d Daegon said. \u201cAt least for now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor now,\u201d Gideon echoed grimly, glancing at them. \u201cI don\u2019t like the sound of that.\u201d<\/p>\n
