Hecate\u2019s hand tightened around his. The pressure wasn\u2019t surprising, though the intensity of it was. Matt\u2019s gaze drifted to her, taking in lips drawn into a fine line, a jaw tightly set, eyes stormy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is it?\u201d he murmured, brows knitting as he looked at her.<\/p>\n

She swallowed, then took a slow breath. \u201cI\u2019ll do it if I have to.\u201d<\/p>\n

He blinked. \u201cDo what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCall them,\u201d she whispered. \u201cCall the dirae<\/em>. Try to take control. I\u2019ll try if we all think it\u2019s necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her grip on his hand was white-knuckle. Matt swallowed hard. \u201cNo,\u201d he murmured. \u201cNo, you won\u2019t call them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan shot him a worried look, one that Matt ignored as he shifted around to face her, his free hand brushing stray strands of hair back from her face. \u201cNone of us are going to ask you to do that unless the circumstances are beyond extreme. We all remember what facing the lampades <\/em>did to you. It\u2019s not an option.\u201d<\/p>\n

She reached up, letting go of his hand to cradle his face between both of hers. \u201cWe might not have a choice,\u201d she whispered. \u201cWe didn\u2019t when the lampades<\/em> hit us. We might not when they come. Because we all know that they\u2019ll come. There\u2019s no doubt, Matt. They\u2019ll come. We all know that.\u201d<\/p>\n

He squeezed his eyes shut. She leaned into his chest and he wrapped his arms around her, holding her tightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to figure out who that cloaked man is,\u201d Phelan murmured. \u201cMaybe that\u2019ll give us leverage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOr none at all,\u201d Gideon said, his tone grim. \u201cHas knowing helped before?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOnly somewhat,\u201d Phelan said. Matt opened his eyes fast enough to catch his friend\u2019s scowl.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, we\u2019ll have to hope that this time, if we can figure it out, it will<\/em> give us an advantage,\u201d Matt said quietly, resting his cheek against Hecate\u2019s hair. \u201cKnowing something is better than nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n
