\u201cSometimes it does more harm than good.\u201d<\/p>\n

They hadn\u2019t heard the footsteps coming, and Matt startled and spun at the sound of Leinth\u2019s voice, blinking as he saw Seamus there with her, pale-faced and moving carefully, but still on his feet. He opened his mouth to speak, only to close it quickly as Seamus cleared his throat.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s the word?\u201d<\/p>\n

Gideon cleared his throat. \u201cDirae<\/em> massing to the northwest. Figure in a dark cloak, apparently male, with them, then another, smaller figure. Daegan couldn\u2019t get a good look.\u201d<\/p>\n

Seamus and Leinth exchanged a look. Her arm tightened around his waist where she held onto him. He squeezed his eyes shut for a moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cOrcus,\u201d he said, his voice gravelly. \u201cAnd probably Persephone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt\u2019s blood ran cold and Hecate tensed.<\/p>\n

\u201cPersephone,\u201d she whispered. \u201cWhy–?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a long story,\u201d Seamus said, his head dropping. \u201cOne we should be sitting for. One I need <\/em>to be sitting for, honestly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRight,\u201d Hecate said, then shuddered. \u201cRight, okay.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan stared at his cousin for a few seconds, then looked at Daegan and Gideon. \u201cThank you,\u201d he murmured.<\/p>\n

Both men nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll stay out here until Paul comes back to take over the watch again,\u201d Gideon said. \u201cGo on. I\u2019m sure someone will tell us the story soon enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan managed a weak smile and a nod. Matt just shivered, wrapping his arm around Hecate\u2019s shoulders and squeezing her tightly against him.<\/p>\n
