I managed to smile, though the slight shift in his expression told me very quickly that he\u2019d seen through the attempt at pretending everything was fine.<\/p>\n<p>His gaze flicked from me to Tala and then back again. \u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d he asked quietly as he slowly lowered himself to sit next to me, laying the crutches on the ground next to us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSame shit, different day,\u201d Tala murmured, sparing me from answering. Thom looked at her, his brow arching slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh goody,\u201d he said, then sighed. \u201cThat does explain while you\u2019re calmly making breakfast as usual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat the hell else am I supposed to do, really?\u201d Her smile was wry, the words without acid, without rancor. \u201cIt\u2019s just another day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t really know exactly what\u2019s going on,\u201d I said. \u201cNot yet, anyway. Probably soon, but not yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust another day,\u201d Thom said with a grimace, echoing Tala.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re damn straight.\u201d She handed him a plate a few moments after he\u2019d sat down, then headed to refill her coffee and make him a cup of the same. \u201cWe need better defenses, though.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs soon as I get healthy, I\u2019ll get right on that.\u201d Thom sighed and leaned his shoulder into mine. I reached up to run my fingers through his hair, smiling weakly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019ll happen,\u201d I assured him softly. He snorted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course it will. Just takes more time than I want it to and it\u2019s time we don\u2019t have in that much abundance if winter comes this year like it did last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, at least we had last winter to make mistakes,\u201d Tala said, bringing over a mug for him. She sat down with us, cross-legged with her back to the fire. \u201cWe won\u2019t make the same ones this year. It\u2019ll be okay, just like it was last winter but more securely. Warmer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thom snorted softly as he lifted his mug. \u201cWarmer,\u201d he agreed. \u201cHopefully a little less horrifying when it comes to problems and storms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething tells me we\u2019ll be able to have one but maybe not the other.\u201d Tala smiled and shrugged. \u201cEither way, we\u2019ll be all right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her optimism warmed me but did nothing to alleviate the sour feeling at the pit of my stomach. They weren\u2019t back yet.
