Hecate\u2019s thoughts cast back through the centuries, thrown there unbidden as her unconscious sought something her conscious mind was certain wasn\u2019t there to find\u2014something, <em>anything<\/em> about Orcus.<\/p>\n<p>She could remember when he\u2019d called her and the forces with her back. There had been no arguing with him\u2014she could even remember the tone he\u2019d used, the harshness of it. But there had been something else, something she hadn\u2019t been able to identify at the time, not that she\u2019d tried very hard. Her brain had been a scrambled mess then. But she knew what it was, now.<\/p>\n<p>It had been <em>glee<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>She hadn\u2019t wanted to come back from the isles, but her reasons had been her own, reasons she\u2019d fought to bury when faced with Pluton\u2019s wrath. She\u2019d managed it\u2014or at least, she\u2019d thought she had.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember it,\u201d she whispered, blinking, vision clearing. Matt\u2019s arm settled around her shoulders, a protective gesture and a comforting one. \u201cI remember him calling us back, forbidding us from venturing to the isles. I remember him being so\u2014\u201d she groped for the word, her brows knitting. Finally, she shook her head. \u201cPractically giddy, which was terrifying in and of itself. I remember Persephone coming to me but I don\u2019t remember why or what she said, only that she was afraid of someone new that he\u2019d exposed her to, someone she said was dangerous. She was worried. I remember that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seamus swallowed hard. \u201cYou think she knew him, then? Or at least, of him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf Orcus?\u201d Hecate took a breath and exhaled slowly. \u201cI think so. For all that happened, Pluton only kept a few things from her and I think that\u2019s why she was so often afraid, why she and I ended up so close. I think she must have known.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leinth looked at Seamus, her brow furrowing. \u201cThen it would fit. Your theory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He gave a full-body shudder. Hecate leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe may have her,\u201d Seamus whispered, his lips barely moving. \u201cShe might be with him.
