He was pale, but resolute. Hecate swallowed hard, half wishing he wasn\u2019t there. She wasn\u2019t sure any of them would very much like the answers she could come up with.<\/p>\n<p>She wasn\u2019t sure <em>she<\/em> liked the answers she could come up with.<\/p>\n<p>Matt squeezed her gently. \u201cThe same way we always do,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cKeep a close eye. Check the wards. Stay alert. Be ready for anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything,\u201d Marin echoed, then shivered. \u201cPar for the course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was just about to say that,\u201d Tala said. She shook her head. \u201cIs this really how it\u2019s going to be? Always?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGods, I hope not,\u201d Marin said, scrubbing a hand over her face. \u201cI don\u2019t know if I can take it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of us can take it,\u201d Phelan murmured. \u201cIt\u2019ll get better. It has to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut <em>when<\/em>?\u201d Tala asked. \u201cWhen the hell is it finally going to get better, Phelan? I don\u2019t know about you, but I\u2019m tired. I\u2019m tired of always being on alert, I\u2019m tired of getting bound up in everything that\u2019s none of our fault\u2014not even yours, or Hecate\u2019s, or Seamus\u2019s, or <em>anyone\u2019s<\/em>. We just get sucked in whether we like it or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do,\u201d Marin agreed. \u201cAnd you\u2019re right, it\u2019s not fair. I just have to hope that by the time our children are old enough to understand that it won\u2019t be a constant struggle anymore. I hope that we\u2019ll have been able to fend off the worst of it and build a life, because that\u2019s what this is. This is our life\u2014this is our <em>home<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019ll be all right,\u201d Thom said, his voice low. His gaze flicked between them, finally settling on his wife. \u201cIt will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was the weight of promise in his voice, heavy and certain. Hecate shivered again and pressed herself against Matt.<\/p>\n<p>She didn\u2019t envy either of them, neither Thom nor Marin.
