\u201cYou always sound so sure,\u201d Tala said, then sighed. \u201cI know I believe you both, but sometimes it\u2019s so hard. Sometimes, it\u2019s so, so hard.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all right,\u201d Thom said with a faint and crooked smile. \u201cIt was hard for me to believe, too. Harder still to believe sometimes that I could change it.\u201d He glanced at Marin, who smiled back. Hecate could have sworn she saw some tears sparkling along Marin\u2019s lashes, but her sister-in-law blinked them back before they could truly manifest.<\/p>\n

There was a story there, one Hecate didn\u2019t know and wasn\u2019t sure she wanted to know. The way Matt\u2019s arms tightened around her made her even more sure of that.<\/p>\n

Tala sighed, shaking her head slightly. \u201cWell, at least I\u2019m not the only one.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNever,\u201d Marin murmured. \u201cAnd never quite stop wondering, Tala. We\u2019re not infallible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Seamus said softly. \u201cYou\u2019re not, but you\u2019re far more powerful than most.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hecate glanced toward Thom and Marin again, then rested her head against Matt\u2019s shoulder. \u201cHe\u2019s right,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I\u2019m glad I\u2019m on your side.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thom laughed at that, shaking his head. \u201cHopefully we never give you cause to change your mind on that.\u201d<\/p>\n
