\u201cSomething bothering you?\u201d Carolyn asked after a few minutes. Hecate glanced up to see the other woman watching her, her brow furrowed slightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a complicated question,\u201d Hecate said softly, then smiled crookedly. \u201cMaybe a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carolyn nodded. \u201cIt usually is. Nothing\u2019s ever really that simple, is it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Hecate choked on a laugh and shook her head, looking back down to her work. She cleared a few weeds away from the base of a stand of flowers. \u201cNo. No, it really isn\u2019t. Only a few things are.\u201d She paused, glancing up again. \u201cYou came out here to think, too?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I did say I was.\u201d Carolyn grinned, then shrugged. \u201cNothing really that important at the end of the day. Some of it\u2019s silly things. A little bit of daydreaming.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou and J.T. are going to get married,\u201d Hecate said. \u201cWas that what it was?\u201d<\/p>\n

Carolyn nodded. \u201cPart of it. Part of it\u2019s a little more than that\u2014questions about whether or not we should have children, that kind of thing. I just don\u2019t know. There\u2019s a lot of things to consider and things are kind of happening a little fast.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hecate smiled weakly. \u201cThat can be a thing,\u201d she said, tossing a handful of weeds into the pile on the other side of the bed, near where Carolyn knelt.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I\u2019m told.\u201d She shrugged again. \u201cI think it was a little different for you and Matt, though. You guys knew each other in another life, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

Hecate nodded, lips thinning. \u201cWe did. We loved each other in another life. It didn\u2019t feel like it was long enough, though.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWould anything ever feel long enough?\u201d Carolyn asked. \u201cBe honest. When you really love someone, I don\u2019t think you really hit a point where enough time together has ever been enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Hecate admitted in a whisper. \u201cNo, I don\u2019t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
