\u201cNeither do I,\u201d Carolyn said.\u00a0 Hecate glanced up at her again and the other woman smiled.\u00a0 \u201cSomething tells me that love\u2019s pretty complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hecate choked on a laugh, feeling tears start to sting in her eyes.\u00a0 \u201cYou have no idea.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cProbably not,\u201d Carolyn said, then shrugged.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m not sure I want one, either.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cProbably not,\u201d Hecate echoed, sitting back against her heels.\u00a0 She smiled wryly.\u00a0 \u201cSo what was bothering you about having children?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWho said it was bothering me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour tone of voice.\u00a0 The way you said it.\u201d\u00a0 Hecate shook her head slightly.\u00a0 \u201cI may have spent most of very long life more than half out of my mind, but that certainly doesn\u2019t mean I can\u2019t read people.\u00a0 In some ways, it made it easier.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carolyn laughed weakly.\u00a0 \u201cWell, since you put it that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSince I put it that way, what\u2019s going on?\u201d\u00a0 Hecate leaned forward, clearing away a little more overgrowth, freeing the stems of another plant from a tangle of invading greenery.<\/p>\n

Carolyn sighed, watching her for a few seconds.\u00a0 Hecate glanced up, her brow arching slightly.<\/p>\n

Finally, Carolyn shifted her position, sitting cross-legged in the grass and fidgeting.\u00a0 \u201cI guess I\u2019m scared,\u201d she said.\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s all.\u00a0 I\u2019m scared to have kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was more than just that, though\u2014Hecate could tell from the way Carolyn\u2019s voice hitched slightly.\u00a0 Carolyn might be afraid of the actual process of carrying a child and giving birth to a child, but whatever fear she carried went beyond that.\u00a0 \u201cScared to have kids or scared to have kids with him?\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked down.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s not that I don\u2019t want children with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen what is it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat if something happens?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

Carolyn swallowed hard.\u00a0 \u201cWhat if something happens to us?\u00a0 To me, to him?\u00a0 What if\u2014what if our child has the same gifts as one of us\u2014or worse, something entirely different?\u00a0 Or what if they\u2019re completely normal and everyone around them isn\u2019t<\/em>?\u00a0 What then?\u201d<\/p>\n

Hecate reached for her hand.\u00a0 Carolyn let her take it, looking up to meet Hecate\u2019s eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe never know,\u201d Hecate said softly.\u00a0 \u201cAnd none of us really will.\u00a0 But know this\u2014no matter what, they\u2019ll always be protected and they\u2019ll always be loved.\u00a0 When you know nothing else, when you can predict nothing else, you know that for certain.\u00a0 No matter what, they\u2019ll be loved.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
