It was a sound more felt than heard.\u00a0 It sent a shiver through his bones as he climbed the hill toward the forge.\u00a0 Smoke already rose from its chimney\u2014Thordin must have been there already, either already working or just getting things warmed up for his inevitable arrival.<\/p>\n

Sipping from his third cup of coffee\u2014worrying and wondering had proven to be thirsty work\u2014Matt had been trying to shake the feeling of unease that plagued him, trying to convince himself that whatever happened was well beyond his ability to affect, at least in the short term.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t think he was wrong.\u00a0 Not this time, anyway.<\/p>\n

Then he felt it, the unheard something<\/em> that he somehow still knew was a sound, and paused a dozen yards from the forge.\u00a0 He looked around slowly, swallowing hard against the bile that suddenly rose in his throat.\u00a0 Above him on the hill, Thordin stepped into the morning light, a strange expression on his face.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you feel that?\u201d Matt asked him.<\/p>\n

Thordin nodded, his jaw tightening briefly.\u00a0 \u201cYeah.\u00a0 You too?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019d better believe it.\u00a0 Where\u2019s it coming from?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d Thordin said, turning to duck back into the forge for a moment.\u00a0 He emerged seconds later with both of their weapons in hand.\u00a0 He lofted Matt\u2019s warhammer toward him.\u00a0 \u201cBut I think we\u2019d better find out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt caught the weapon by its haft and nodded.\u00a0 He drained his coffee and jogged the last few steps to the forge to leave the mug there.\u00a0 \u201cWhat do you think it is?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u00a0 But we\u2019ll find that out, too.\u201d\u00a0 Thordin clapped a hand to his shoulder, squeezing for a second.\u00a0 Matt smiled grimly.<\/p>\n
