\u201cNot much time,\u201d Gideon murmured, then shook his head slightly. \u201cBut it\u2019s something.\u201d He frowned for a second. \u201cDo you think Daegon was wrong, then?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOn the distance, yes.\u201d Matt took a deep breath. \u201cThe rest\u2014well. I doubt we could be so lucky in that. I think he was probably right about what he saw. Just not the distance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gideon nodded. \u201cWell, come on. Anselm\u2019s in the usual spot. I doubt he\u2019ll have me round up many of the other seniors. It\u2019ll be an easy decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope so,\u201d Matt said, his stomach sinking even as his spirits lifted\u2014if only for a few seconds. \u201cDid you send anyone else out after he got back?\u201d<\/p>\n

Gideon shook his head. \u201cNot yet. I think he was waiting to talk to you at more length\u2014all of you. Something tells me he\u2019ll be surprised that it took you this long to come.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, sometimes we take advantage of the luxury of time to think,\u201d Thom said quietly as they headed into the Hunt\u2019s quarter of the village, among tents and cookfires and the foundations of what would someday be their cabins and cottages when they were home rather than out riding. \u201cUntil we got this word\u2014well. We thought we had that luxury.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gideon shot him a faint, crooked smile. \u201cThat\u2019s exactly what it is\u2014a luxury. All of this is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thom nodded, looking thoughtful for a second. Matt just shivered.<\/p>\n

He was far, far too right about that, uncomfortably so.<\/p>\n

All of this is a luxury.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you think Anselm will say?\u201d Matt asked.<\/p>\n

Gideon shrugged. \u201cHard to say. Depends on what, exactly, we know, and what else Daegon told him after I left them together. They were still talking when I left. I guess we\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n
