\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Seamus\u2019s breath hitched for a second, a stab of pain that went beyond the physical lancing through him.\u00a0 Hecate was looking him right in the eye, but he didn\u2019t see any fear in her gaze\u2014only determination and maybe a little worry, but not fear.\u00a0 He wasn\u2019t sure if she\u2019d somehow buried it or if there really wasn\u2019t any.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He also wasn\u2019t sure which would be worse.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cYou mean beyond the obvious?\u201d Seamus asked, his voice oddly hoarse, as if something unseen was strangling him.\u00a0 For all he knew, maybe something was.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Marin smiled crookedly.\u00a0 \u201cWe already considered the obvious.\u00a0 Both of our guts told us that it wasn\u2019t enough to justify what he\u2019s doing.\u00a0 Persephone is a valuable asset to him.\u00a0 Why would he be willing to trade her for Hecate?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThe power differential is balanced out by the fact that there are a lot of people out there that wouldn\u2019t touch him for fear of her safety\u2014never mind the power she can wield on her own if she\u2019s allowed to do it.\u201d\u00a0 Hecate chewed her lower lip.\u00a0 \u201cIf it\u2019s sheer destructive force that\u2019s in question, she can mete out at least as much as I can.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think he\u2019s using her as a weapon, though, even though he absolutely could.\u00a0 Instead he came here and offered her in exchange for me.\u00a0 I just don\u2019t understand why.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Seamus\u2019s thoughts reeled.\u00a0 He sank back against the pillows, tilting his head back to stare at the ceiling, trying to process\u2014trying to think.\u00a0 There had to be a reason\u2014but was he the one that would know<\/i> the reason?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If not me, then who?<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
