What was it that Daegon said about what he saw?\u00a0 Oh.<\/em>\u00a0 \u201cIt could be that you\u2019d have more control over something he wants to call,\u201d Seamus said.\u00a0 He swallowed bile, his throat sour and his mouth drying out.\u00a0 \u201cThe dirae<\/em>, the lampades<\/em>\u2014something else.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSomething else,\u201d Hecate echoed, her gaze growing distant for a few moments.\u00a0 She wet her lips, staring off into the middle distance.\u00a0 \u201cMaybe,\u201d she murmured.\u00a0 \u201cMaybe that\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you have a history of being able to control a lot of things like those?\u201d Marin asked, her voice quiet.\u00a0 Hecate glanced up over her shoulder at her, smiling a crooked grin.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou could say that.\u00a0 You know that they\u2019ve used me\u2014what they\u2019ve used me for.\u00a0 They made sure I had weapons at my disposal.\u00a0 Then, later, I extended and expanded on what they\u2019d taught me.\u201d\u00a0 Her smile faded and she looked away, stared at her hands for a few seconds.\u00a0 Hecate took a slow breath, then exhaled, squeezing her eyes shut.\u00a0 \u201cYou might be right, Seamus.\u00a0 It could be that.\u00a0 But something\u2014I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 Something\u2019s still sitting wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you think it maybe has something to do with your erstwhile ex?\u201d<\/p>\n

Hecate\u2019s gaze snapped to Leinth, her jaw tightening for a few seconds before it relaxed.\u00a0 \u201cWhy would\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause they\u2019re both opportunists,\u201d Seamus interrupted, his voice quiet.\u00a0 \u201cIt would fit.\u00a0 If Orcus thought that he could gain something from an alliance, no matter how lopsided, he\u2019d make it.\u00a0 He\u2019d stick to the very letter of the agreement because I\u2019m certain that whatever one he made was one he made in his own favor.\u201d\u00a0 He shook his head slowly, stomach roiling. \u00a0\u201cYes.\u00a0 It could be that.\u00a0 It may well be.\u201d<\/p>\n
