Phelan smiled faintly, cradling his mug in both hands. He sipped slowly, savoring the heat and ignoring the bitterness that the herbs lent to the brew. \u201cYou might be right,\u201d he said after a few sips, still thinking on what she\u2019d said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course I might be right,\u201d Hecate said with an almost defiant air. \u201cOf course, I could also be dead wrong, but I don\u2019t think I am. It\u2019s what makes sense and if we\u2019d stopped to think rather than react, we\u2019d have realized that much sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know Matt\u2019s still in knee-jerk reaction mode,\u201d Marin said quietly.<\/p>\n

Hecate snorted softly. \u201cI\u2019m aware. That\u2019s why you and I went to talk to Seamus while he took Thom to go war council with the Hunt. We\u2019ll see how that all went soon enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan winced. \u201cHe went to what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s got a plan,\u201d Marin said, shaking her head again. \u201cIt might work, but not without their help. I guess we\u2019ll see how it shakes loose.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan frowned for a few seconds. A plan. I\u2019m almost afraid of what it might be.<\/em> He sighed quietly. \u201cSomething tells me it\u2019s dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cProbably no more dangerous than sitting back and letting them come,\u201d Hecate said. \u201cWhich I think is probably the alternative and not one any of us are very excited about. We still don\u2019t have enough defenses in place and three days wouldn\u2019t be enough time for us to get<\/em> defenses we\u2019d need in place\u2014at least not enough to bunker in without a major fight and probably a lot of people hurt, maybe even killed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan winced. He wasn\u2019t sure if it was the matter-of-fact tone or the idea that maybe, just maybe, someone could get killed this time. Of course, that was always a possibility\u2014it just wasn\u2019t one he ever liked to consider.<\/p>\n
