\u201cDo you think I should ride out with them?\u201d<\/p>\n

It was a long time before the words came, and longer still before Neve answered him. Her voice was quiet, muffled by his shirt. \u201cWhat do you think you should do? What does your heart say?\u201d<\/p>\n

He reached down, his fingers brushing over her arms where they were wrapped around his waist. \u201cI don\u2019t know. I can\u2019t hear it right now. There\u2019s too much rattling around in my head.\u201d<\/p>\n

Neve huffed a quiet laugh. \u201cI suppose I know how that feels. Do you think it\u2019s as conflicted as your head is?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe,\u201d he murmured. \u201cI feel like I should go with them, but at the same time, I feel like my place is with you and the kids. If I go, who protects you? Who protects all the others that are staying behind?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll manage,\u201d Neve said, her arms tightening for a second. \u201cBesides, we\u2019re not going to need protection. Everything will be fine, Cam, no matter what. This attack\u2014this preemptive strike\u2014it\u2019s not going to fail. I know it. It can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish I had your confidence,\u201d he whispered. \u201cGod, Neve, I wish I could be as sure as you are.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, someone has to be while everyone else is being maudlin and losing hope. Don\u2019t worry, it won\u2019t last.\u201d She peeked around his shoulder, grinning playfully. Cameron couldn\u2019t help but smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love you,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t say it often enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou say it pretty often.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot enough.\u201d She pressed a kiss to his cheek. Cameron squeezed her arm.<\/p>\n

\u201cI still haven\u2019t decided,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou will.\u201d She kissed the back of his neck, then let go. \u201cCome take a nap. It\u2019ll help.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you sure of that, too?\u201d<\/p>\n

Neve shot him a crooked smile. \u201cPretty sure, at least.\u201d<\/p>\n

She turned, then, and started to leave. Cameron sighed, watching her, then racked the brush and followed her out. Maybe she was right.<\/p>\n
