He came awake a few hours later, in the darkness of their room, Neve nestled against his chest. Her breathing was soft and even\u2014she was still asleep. The twins, too, were sleeping a few feet away in their shared cradle. He wasn\u2019t quite sure how long he\u2019d been asleep, but it was long enough for his eyes to be gritty and for him to feel at least vaguely rested.<\/p>\n

A knock came at the door a few seconds after he got his bearings. Cameron breathed a quiet curse as he sat up, gently tucking blankets around Neve again, praying she didn\u2019t wake up. He stumbled out of bed, seemingly in time to forestall another round of knocking that would have been sure to wake both Neve and the twins.<\/p>\n

His heart started to beat a little faster. The scouts must be back. Time to start the real work.<\/em><\/p>\n

No matter what he ended up deciding, he knew that he\u2019d do his best to poke any holes into their plans he could\u2014all in the name of making sure that people made it home alive.<\/p>\n

He cracked the door open, peering out to see Thordin standing outside, a lantern in hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe scouts are back?\u201d Cameron asked softly.<\/p>\n

Thordin nodded, peeking past him toward Neve, still asleep in bed. \u201cYeah. It\u2019s time to hear their report. Do you\u2014?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLet her sleep,\u201d Cameron said, groping around in the darkness for his shoes. \u201cShe might not be getting much the next couple of days.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stepped out, tugging the door closed behind him. Thordin watched him, expression unreadable. Cameron frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing,\u201d Thordin said. \u201cI just don\u2019t think she\u2019s going to be happy about that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019ll understand where my head was,\u201d Cameron said. \u201cCome on. Let\u2019s see if there\u2019s coffee yet.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
