It was colder in the hall than Cameron had honestly expected and he shivered slightly, chafing his hands over bare arms. Thordin glanced at him again, a frown creasing his forehead.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s the matter with you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t think it\u2019s cold?\u201d<\/p>\n

The question was met with a grimace and a shrug. \u201cColder than it was when we went to bed, sure. It\u2019s a clear night out there.\u201d Thordin shoved his hands into the pockets of his jeans. He was wearing a sweatshirt, though, something Cameron hadn\u2019t quite thought to grab when they\u2019d left.<\/p>\n

Too late now. Not going back\u2014I might wake Neve.<\/em> Cameron just gave a last shiver and reminded himself that soon they\u2019d be near the fire and he wouldn\u2019t need to worry about wanting a sweatshirt.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou nervous?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAbout what?\u201d Cameron asked, shoving his hands into the pockets of his sweatpants.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlanning this shit,\u201d Thordin said. \u201cWhat might be happening in the very near future?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Thordin shot him a grin that was half cheeky, half death\u2019s head. \u201cWhat do you<\/em> think?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we\u2019re all scared shitless and trying to pretend that we\u2019re not,\u201d Cameron said, then exhaled, shaking his head. \u201cHigh stakes and it\u2019s something more ballsy than anything we\u2019ve ever thought about doing before. I think it\u2019ll work, though. We just have to trust ourselves and each other. Whatever we come up with, it\u2019ll work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s some serious confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, well.\u201d Cameron shrugged as they stepped out into the night air, chilly enough to make his skin pucker. \u201cThat\u2019s what we\u2019re all playing at, right? Maybe if we\u2019re confident enough without tipping into arrogance, we\u2019ll pull through. Either way, we\u2019re going to come up with a good plan. We\u2019re going to put all of our heads together, we\u2019re going to pool all of our collective knowledge, and we\u2019ll figure out how to beat this bad once and for all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thordin stayed silent for a few seconds, then nodded. \u201cThose are the stakes.\u201d<\/p>\n
