He wouldn\u2019t be that crazy.<\/em> Thom closed his eyes for a second, wishing he didn\u2019t feel like he was lying to himself. He\u2014no. No, he wouldn\u2019t.<\/em><\/p>\n

Would he?<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen did they get in?\u201d<\/p>\n

His eyes snapped open at the sound of Phelan\u2019s voice. The other man looked as if he hadn\u2019t slept well, eyes sunken and hair standing up in every possible direction. Thom\u2019s brow furrowed for a moment, watching Phelan settle into a spot near the fire. Jacqueline was with him, scrubbing the sleep from her own eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe scouts?\u201d Thordin crossed his arms, frowning at the fire. \u201cFifteen minutes. They\u2019re checking in with Anselm and then they\u2019ll be here and we\u2019ll figure out what the hell we\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan nodded slowly. \u201cSomeone\u2019s getting the others?\u201d<\/p>\n

Thordin nodded. \u201cAnd Matt was helping the Hunt with their horses. Shouldn\u2019t be long.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thom swallowed hard. Please don\u2019t let him be foolish. Please.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cDo you want some coffee, Phelan?\u201d Marin asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know if it\u2019s a matter of want<\/em>,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m pretty sure I need it at this point.\u201d<\/p>\n

She laughed a little. \u201cI\u2019m pretty sure everyone does.\u201d<\/p>\n

She started pouring. Thom watched her, his throat oddly tight.<\/p>\n

Whatever we come up with has to work. It has to. I will not lose her\u2014I won\u2019t lose any of them.<\/em><\/p>\n

Not today and not tomorrow. Not <\/em>soon. Someday, maybe. But not soon.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
