They walked a dozen paces in silence before Matt glanced at Phelan. \u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019m as scared as I should be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan blinked, looking at him sidelong. \u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean I should be terrified,\u201d Matt said. \u201cInstead I feel…I don\u2019t know. Numb, almost. It\u2019s weird. This is the first time I\u2019ve headed out on some kind of assault like this and it should be tying me up in knots and I should be flailing around trying to figure out why I came up with this insane idea for a frontal assault but I don\u2019t feel that way. You told me not to do a stupid thing back there, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRight.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou knew what I was thinking about doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh yeah,\u201d Phelan said, then smiled crookedly. \u201cI had no doubts about what you were thinking about doing, Matt. I\u2019m glad you hadn\u2019t done it yet. It would have been a stupid, suicidal move on the same level as the ones I usually pull and that\u2019s not a game you want to be playing. I\u2019m damn lucky to have survived all the shit I\u2019ve pulled over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDid he ever do anything like that?\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan paused, his brow furrowing slightly. \u201cAre you sure you want to know the answer to that question?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI asked it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou did.\u201d Phelan exhaled, straightening his shoulders slightly before nodding. \u201cHe did. A few times, actually. He would usually scare the shit out of his sister and Finn, but he never really let that phase him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo it was all through his life, huh?\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan nodded. \u201cBefore, during, after\u2014there were some things becoming the Ridden Druid, having been part of the Hunt and then escaped it\u2014there were some things that didn\u2019t change.\u201d He smiled crookedly. \u201cI guess maybe some of that survived to pop back up in you but with more sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt smiled back. \u201cI\u2019m not sure if I should take that as a compliment or be offended.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan shrugged. \u201cSometimes both is good.\u201d<\/p>\n
