Phelan studied him for a few seconds, his brow furrowing slightly. They passed form the light of the torches nearer the wall and into the darkness between it and the tents, the cookfires. The Hunt\u2019s camp was stirring, even at the early hour. They knew something was coming, just the same as Matt and Phelan did. They would be making ready for whatever was to come.<\/p>\n

Of course, they\u2019re also used to operating on short sleep and being ready for a fight,<\/em> Matt reflected, then shivered slightly. How would the rest of them fare? Not as well as the Hunt, he suspected.<\/p>\n

Though I would love to be wrong about that.<\/em><\/p>\n

He met Phelan\u2019s gaze, his brow furrowing. \u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s more of him to you than I think you let on,\u201d Phelan said softly. \u201cOr maybe more than you realize. It\u2019s hard to say either way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt shivered slightly, then shrugged. \u201cI suppose that\u2019s both good and bad at the same time, isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan nodded slightly. \u201cAye. It is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you hoping for one thing over another?\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan smiled. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t say that. C\u00edar could be reckless when he wanted to be, when he thought it was warranted. He and his sister were very much alike\u2014just like you and Marin are now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre we?\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded. \u201cIt would be absurd of me to say that the two of you remind me of them, though. I mean\u2014you are<\/em> them, or you were, long ago. But the little things every so often\u2014they remind me so much it aches.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2014I\u2019m sorry,\u201d Matt said, and meant it.<\/p>\n
