cheerfully crackling fire that he was still poking every so often with a stick.\u00a0 I stretched my hands out toward the flames, letting warmth bleed into them from the ambient heat of the fire.\u00a0 My fingers were cold and stiff from rigging up the tent walls we\u2019d taken down the day before, when the weather had been more pleasant.\u00a0 We\u2019d thought to get some fresh air into the tent while we could, while the weather permitted. \u00a0I was already shuddering to think what winter would be like.\u00a0 Of course, hopefully we\u2019d have something other than a tent to huddle in before that came, but no one was placing any bets on that being possible yet.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cMatt\u2019s waking the others?\u201d\u00a0 Thom asked, setting aside the stick and rocking up on one knee to check the kettle.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I nodded, flexing my fingers as the feeling returned to them, an uncomfortable pins-and-needles sensation.\u00a0 \u201cYeah.\u00a0 After they\u2019re up and over here, we can get started.\u00a0 Stasia went down to the other tent?\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cAnd took Brandon with her.\u00a0 Did you tell Jack to grab some sleep?\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cYeah.\u201d\u00a0 Thom sat back again, watching me for a minute.\u00a0 \u201cCold?\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I snorted.\u00a0 \u201cY\u2019think?\u201d\u00a0 He took one of my hands and closed my fingers between both of his hands, the heat from his flesh bleeding into mine.\u00a0 I sighed and leaned against his shoulder.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cAt least the walls are up,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cDon\u2019t have to worry about that when the weather hits.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I nodded.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Somewhere in the distance, thunder growled.\u00a0 I tried not to shiver, tasting rain on the wind.\u00a0 Thom squeezed my fingers, then took my other hand and repeated the warming process.\u00a0 J.T. joined us as he was in the midst of that, yawning and rubbing at his eyes, shadows deep beneath them.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cEarly morning,\u201d he mumbled as he checked the kettle and then grabbed the coffee press.\u00a0 \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong now?\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cStorm rolling in,\u201d I said.\u00a0 \u201cBright red sky.\u00a0 Something told both of us that was <em>probably<\/em> bad and probably worth waking up some of you a little earlier than anticipated.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cProbably right.\u201d\u00a0 J.T. rubbed his eyes again and started loading the coffee press.\u00a0 The rest slowly filtered toward the fire as he got the coffee going\u2014Kellin, my brother, Rory, Drew, Davon, Carolyn, Jacqueline, and Tala.\u00a0 Greg Doyle was the last to join us, shuffling over and yawning mightily.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cPressure\u2019s shifting,\u201d he said quietly as he slowly sat down near the fire, adjusting the blanket he had wrapped around his shoulders.\u00a0 \u201cI can feel it in the break.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If Thom had a similar feeling, he kept it to himself.\u00a0 He accepted a mug of coffee from J.T., then passed it to me.\u00a0 I took a sip from the mug and nodded at Greg.\u00a0 \u201cThere\u2019s some nasty rolling in, we think.\u00a0 That\u2019s why we\u2019re battening down the hatches, though that\u2019s not the whole reason Matt woke all of you.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Kellin joined J.T. in handing out the hot drinks.\u00a0 \u201cYou want to get the logistics powwow started early.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I nodded.\u00a0 \u201cSeemed like a good idea at the time.\u00a0 Especially if the storm starts waking people.\u201d\u00a0 I still wasn\u2019t sure how I felt about excluding so many people from the planning, but as Kellin had pointed out\u2014and Greg agreed\u2014any community needed some sort of leadership, and we\u2019d all kind of risen to the top of the heap in the past few days.\u00a0 There wasn\u2019t really any grumbling yet, but that was probably because everyone was dry and fed at the end of the day.\u00a0 With any luck, that trend would continue.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cCould I start, then?\u201d\u00a0 Greg asked, taking the mug of coffee that Kellin offered him.\u00a0 When no one spoke up, he edged a little closer to the fire and started.\u00a0 \u201cA couple of us have talked about needing greenhouses to grow food, but we can\u2019t really expect to hike out to the big one when the weather\u2019s bad, assuming the way stays stable enough to get there in the winter.\u00a0 We can probably put together a few up here with some wood framing and the broken glass here on campus.\u00a0 We got all that silicon seal from the hardware store.\u00a0 If we do it right, we can use that with the glass to make the panes we\u2019ll need for the greenhouses.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cYou think it\u2019s possible?\u201d\u00a0 Davon asked after a few moments of silence.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWon\u2019t know until we try it.\u00a0 I think it should work.\u00a0 Probably do it in pots and raised beds to protect the plants from the ground freezing.\u00a0 Might even be able to get enough large sections of glass that we won\u2019t have to silicon many of the pieces together.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cHow much time do you think we\u2019ve got before the ground freezes?\u201d\u00a0 I asked quietly.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cToo early to know,\u201d he said, glancing over his shoulder toward one of the gaps in the tent\u2019s walls we left so the fire\u2019s smoke could escape.\u00a0 \u201cCould be months.\u00a0 Could be weeks.\u00a0 We can hope to get lucky.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Lucky would mean months instead of weeks.<\/em>\u00a0 I nodded a little.\u00a0 Carolyn was taking notes in a tattered notebook that she balanced against her knee.\u00a0 Thom looked at Greg.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cHave you done any plans or figuring?\u00a0 If you haven\u2019t we should probably talk.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Greg nodded.\u00a0 \u201cWe should probably do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<a
