\u201cIt will certainly give us an element of surprise,\u201d Phelan said, leading his horse into the lee of the trees. It wouldn\u2019t be much protection from the rain and damp, but if the wind kicked back up, the creature would at least have a little shelter against that<\/em>. \u201cYou didn\u2019t risk a fire,\u201d he observed, looking at the scouts.<\/p>\n

The second scout shook his head. \u201cNo. We were worried less about the light and more that they\u2019d smell the woodsmoke. It\u2019s been a long night.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo doubt,\u201d Phelan said. \u201cDon\u2019t worry. This should be the home stretch.\u201d<\/p>\n

The second scout looked at him strangely, frowning. \u201cI don\u2019t follow.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s all right,\u201d Thom said with a faint smile as Marin helped him down from his horse\u2019s back. \u201cMost of us don\u2019t. What he means is that if this works, we\u2019ll be safe to light a fire in the next few hours.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFew hours,\u201d the first scout echoed, blinking as he looked between them. \u201cThat quickly? You plan to move that quickly?\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt nodded. \u201cThe faster we move, the less chance of them figuring out we\u2019re here and being able to counter us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two scouts exchanged looks. The second swallowed hard. \u201cDamn,\u201d he breathed. \u201cYou are<\/em> as bold as he was.\u201d<\/p>\n
