A narrow trail led away from the edge of the rise, not much more than a game trail. Hikers must have climbed this bluff before the end of everything, but no one had come this way except for the scouts\u2014not in a long time. That much was clear as Sif and I picked our way through bramble and brush that had started to overtake the pathway in places. They tugged at the legs of our pants, catching on our sleeves and quivers. Sif glanced at me and offered up a feral grin.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, we\u2019ll certainly hear them coming, won\u2019t we?\u201d<\/p>\n

I snorted softly. \u201cOdds are pretty strong we\u2019d figure it out either way.\u201d<\/p>\n

She nodded. We lapsed back into silence until we crossed through the stand of trees to a narrow clearing between that stand and another. Beyond that second stand of trees would be the brush-shrouded ridge that we\u2019d array ourselves on for our assault. Sif squinted up at the trees as we paused.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think we might want to array some people in the mid-level branches? Trees look old enough to have ones strong enough to support some of the Hunt.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe,\u201d I said. \u201cDepends on how much space we\u2019ve got on the other side. This spot looks pretty good for staging, though, and fallback if we start getting hit.\u201d<\/p>\n

She grimaced. \u201cHit by what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m trying not to think about the answer to that question,\u201d I told her with a wry smile. \u201cWe know that they\u2019ve got some nasty airborne things.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIsn\u2019t the plan to have Hecate seize control there?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d I said. \u201cBut that\u2019s asking a lot of her, isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sif shrugged. \u201cI guess. Maybe. Don\u2019t you think she can do it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course I think she can do it,\u201d I said, heading for the treeline. \u201cBut I\u2019d be stupid not to have a backup plan.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is<\/em> your backup plan?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThordin.\u201d<\/p>\n

She paused a moment, then nodded. \u201cGood backup plan.\u201d Then she followed me into the trees.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
