Sif stayed silent for a few seconds, then cleared her throat. \u201cRight, then,\u201d she murmured. \u201cInches and miles, I guess, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t have a choice, Sif,\u201d I said. \u201cWe\u2019re committed. We\u2019re doing this. It\u2019s our only shot\u2014moreso now that you and I have seen the size of this army from above.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re not bunched up enough,\u201d she said, her brow furrowing. \u201cHow do we solve that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMatt and Phelan,\u201d I said. \u201cMaybe a little Thordin. If Hecate takes control of the forces she used to command? Maybe just her. I don\u2019t know. That\u2019s a variable we\u2019ll have to weigh once they get a look at this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou want me to go get them?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d I said, my gaze drifting back toward the army camp below us. \u201cQuick and quiet. The rest can hold where they are.\u201d<\/p>\n

She nodded quickly, then eased back through the brush and down the rise, back toward the trees. I crouched amidst the brush, just watching for a few minutes. The camp gave no sign of being on any kind of alert. Figures milled around without rhyme or reason, some pausing alongside each other as if in conversation, others moving from one campfire to another. There were at least a few that seemed to be sentries watching the edges of the camp, but there weren\u2019t many\u2014not nearly as many as I would have expected for a camp this size.<\/p>\n

Cocky. Maybe a little overconfident.<\/em><\/p>\n

I blew out a silent breath. I could hope that he was overconfident and that we\u2019d make him pay for it. What I was seeing, what we\u2019d planned, what my instincts were telling me was that we could\u2014that he would<\/em> pay for his overconfidence.<\/p>\n

This time, anyway.<\/p>\n

That was when it hit me that we\u2019d have to kill him. He couldn\u2019t be allowed to escape. We would get one shot at this and then never again.<\/p>\n
