More than any other, that was a sobering thought. For a few seconds, I stared blankly at the camp below, barely daring to breathe. I had never faced something quite like this before, a realization of this level of magnitude. In some ways, even realizing that everything we\u2019d ever known had come to an end wasn\u2019t even as daunting as this.<\/p>\n

We have to kill Orcus to stop him. We have to kill him today or tonight\u2014by the end of this fight, he\u2019ll have to be dead or we\u2019ll never be safe. Never.<\/em><\/p>\n

A chill shot down my spine.<\/p>\n

Can I do that? If it were me against him, face to face, could I?<\/em><\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t have an answer.<\/p>\n

A soft rustle behind me made me turn and look back, seeing Sif returning with Thordin, Phelan, Matt, and Hecate in tow. I exhaled quietly, more glad to see them than I\u2019d ever been\u2014somehow, their presence was a relief. I waved them forward, turning back toward the view below the rise.<\/p>\n

Phelan was the one to settle immediately to my left, Matt and Hecate on my right. Thordin peered through the brush on the other side of Phelan, with Sif hanging back a little, her gaze roaming. I cleared my throat.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s more than we thought,\u201d I said, echoing what I\u2019d said before to Sif.<\/p>\n

Phelan nodded slowly. \u201cThere are. What are you thinking?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat we can still make this work,\u201d I said. \u201cThat we have to make this work.\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded again. \u201cAgreed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re spread out,\u201d Matt muttered, frowning. \u201cI didn\u2019t expect that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNone of us could,\u201d Thordin said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t know exactly what his force was built with until now. The scouts couldn\u2019t get close enough for a really good look.\u201d<\/p>\n
