Hecate found her voice first. \u201cWell, that\u2019s reassuring,\u201d she said, her tone measured and voice quiet. She was staring off over the camp below, almost seeming to get her bearings\u2014as if she knew what was going to be asked of her.<\/p>\n

Honestly, she probably did. It wasn\u2019t that hard to guess, especially when she\u2019d practically volunteered for it the day before.<\/p>\n

Matt glanced at her, then at me. He seemed to avoid looking back out over the camp again, as if he were suddenly regretting the idea to come in the first place. \u201cWhat\u2019s your plan?\u201d he asked, lips thinning. \u201cI\u2019m assuming it\u2019s mostly based on the camp being a hell of a lot bigger than we anticipated.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe camp\u2019s bigger,\u201d I agreed. \u201cBut I don\u2019t think the army\u2019s really that much bigger, just more spread out. We\u2019ll need to bunch them up for maximum effect and sow chaos in the ranks.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got no way of knowing how disciplined they are,\u201d Thordin murmured, his gaze trained on the camp below. \u201cNo idea if they\u2019ll cut and run or stand.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s Orcus,\u201d Phelan said. \u201cOdds are that any army he\u2019s put together is going to stand and fight, one way or another\u2014either out of discipline or pure fear of him<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a wise fear,\u201d Hecate said, shaking her head slightly. \u201cSo how do we bunch them up without losing our edge?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s where Matt and Phelan come in,\u201d I said quietly, glancing at the two of them. \u201cI need you two to force them toward the center of the camp.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt blinked at me. \u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know how,\u201d Phelan murmured. \u201cSo do I.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCan you do it?\u201d I asked him.<\/p>\n

Phelan glanced out at the camp again, studying it for a few moments before he answered. \u201cYeah. Yeah, I think we can.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGood,\u201d I said, ignoring Matt\u2019s almost stricken look. \u201cBecause that\u2019s what we need you to do as soon as we\u2019re in position to start the assault.\u201d<\/p>\n
