\u201cKay. Hey, Kay.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kailey Astoris tried her damnedest to ignore her younger brother\u2019s hissed call. Whatever mischief Finn had gotten into was something she didn\u2019t want any part of\u2014she\u2019d gotten into enough trouble on his account in the past few weeks. Perched in a tree with a book open in her lap, she was content to pretend that she simply wasn\u2019t there to hear him.<\/p>\n

She tilted her head back, leaning against the rough trunk of the tree, staring at the leaves fluttering in the breeze, at the shafts of light that filtered down through them. It was comfortable there, even balancing on a branch that was perhaps not quite<\/em> large enough to be a wholly stable perch, but still and all it was her favorite spot.<\/p>\n

\u201cKay, I know you\u2019re here.\u201d Her brother\u2019s voice was closer now. She tucked a finger into her book to mark her place and peered down toward the sound, brow furrowing.<\/p>\n

She couldn\u2019t see him.<\/p>\n

How does he know I\u2019m out here? No one saw me leave.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cKay, I found your shoes. Come down. Something happened to Lin.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her heart seized, stomach folding in on herself. No. No, no, not again.<\/em><\/p>\n

She tucked the book under her arm and scrambled down a few branches, then dropped the last few feet to the ground, landing in a crouch. Finn stood a few feet away, his eyes wide and his expression surprised, as if he hadn\u2019t quite expected her to be exactly where she was.<\/p>\n

He held out her shoes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d she asked as she took them, tugging them on before starting to walk back toward the village proper.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know because no one will tell me,\u201d Finn said. \u201cBut Aunt Jac won\u2019t make you leave if you go help.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere are they?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLin\u2019s cottage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kailey nodded, handing him her book. \u201cI\u2019ll find out. Do you know where Tory and Anne are?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. I was up at the forge helping Dad. He sent me to go find Uncle Phelan and Uncle Phelan sent me to get Aunt Jac\u2019s kit and then I came looking for you because no one will tell me anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRight,\u201d she said, exhaling and starting to walk a little faster. \u201cI\u2019ll find out. You go find the others.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone, or just Tory and Anne?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMostly Tory and Anne,\u201d Kay said. \u201cBut if you find Gwen and Kurt, too, then that\u2019s a bonus.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRight,\u201d Finn muttered. \u201cWhy the hell am I always the errand boy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause most of the time, you\u2019re the youngest.\u201d She waved him off. \u201cGo. I\u2019ll tell you what I find out once I find out something.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAll right,\u201d Finn said, sounding like he didn\u2019t quite believe her. \u201cYou promise?\u201d<\/p>\n
