She took a quick, steadying breath followed by another, staring intently at her aunt. The healer worked quickly and efficiently as she always did, but Kailey detected the barest tremor to Jacqueline\u2019s hands as she cleaned Lin\u2019s wounds.<\/p>\n<p><em>Shit, is she <\/em>scared<em>?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>She couldn\u2019t have blamed her for being, if even half the stories were true or unexaggerated. She always suspected Phelan of exaggerating\u2014it was just instinct. Kailey hugged her arms around herself, brow furrowing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that why the wounds look weird?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jacqueline startled slightly. \u201cIs what why?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it was a <em>camazotzi<\/em>,\u201d she said slowly. \u201cIs that why they don\u2019t look right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m surprised you noticed,\u201d Jacqueline said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was paying attention most of the time,\u201d Kailey said, glancing down at her feet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not that,\u201d Jacqueline said. \u201cYou\u2019ve never seen anything like this before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, no,\u201d Kailey said. \u201cBut I could still tell they didn\u2019t seem like normal cuts and scrapes and it\u2019s not just because they\u2019re deeper, is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Jacqueline admitted quietly. \u201cIt\u2019s not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She edged a little closer. Lin seemed to finish as she leaned in for a better look. \u201cDo they always look like this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Jacqueline said. \u201cThere\u2019s reasons for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReasons?\u201d Kailey frowned. \u201cLike what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s my blood,\u201d Lin rasped quietly. \u201cMy bloodline, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>What?<\/em> Kailey frowned, glancing at Jacqueline. \u201cIt can\u2019t possibly be that, can it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The healer sighed. \u201cSo far as we know, yes. Yes, it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s insane,\u201d Kailey blurted, looking between the two. \u201cIt makes no sense. Why would that make a difference?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause some things hurt people with higher concentrations of Otherworlder blood in them,\u201d Jacqueline said quietly, gently. \u201cAnd sometimes it has to do with the potency of that blood.
