Once Jacqueline had enlisted her help in treating Lin\u2019s wounds, silence had dominated\u2014silence beyond phrases like \u201cpass me the thread\u201d and \u201cmove your arm, please.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It had almost been enough to drive her mad, but now that she and her cousin were alone, all the questions she wanted answers to were questions that tasted like ash on her tongue, that stuck in her throat, lodged there and stopped her voice. Her shoes were on the floor and she hugged her knees against her chest, watching Lin carefully. There was a pallor to his face that she didn\u2019t like, one that asked more questions than it answered. Jacqueline had given him some pills to take before she\u2019d left. Kailey hadn\u2019t seen him take them; she\u2019d been cleaning up while Jacqueline got Lin loaded into bed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho told you?\u201d Lin finally broke the silence after what felt like forever. He still wasn\u2019t looking at her, but she could tell that his focus was, more or less, centered on her despite the aversion of his gaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho told me what?\u201d The question seemed absurd. Did it really matter how she\u2019d found out?<\/p>\n<p>He sighed and closed his eyes for a second. \u201cFine. Don\u2019t tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just don\u2019t see why it matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt kind of does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head slightly and sagged into the mattress, pulling his blankets closer. \u201cJust&#8230;never mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh no,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re not playing that game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat game?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one where you try to make me feel guilty for not telling you what you want me to tell you. I\u2019m not playing it, not when I\u2019m this worried about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorried,\u201d he echoed, eyes coming open. He peered at her from within his cocoon of blankets. \u201cIt\u2019s just some scratches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose are more than just some scratches.\u201d She leaned forward. \u201cAnd you know it but you don\u2019t want to talk about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why you want to know who told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBingo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was Finn,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd all of the others probably already know.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[This post is from Kailey Astoris&#8217;s point of view.] She lingered after Jacqueline had gone, sitting at the foot of Lin\u2019s bed as he curled beneath the covers, staring at the closed curtains across the room.
